Small Failures That Add Up
Microinverter repair covers systems where each panel has its own small inverter mounted underneath it. Many rooftop systems use this design. The upside is that one failed unit only takes out one panel, not the whole system. The downside is that failures can go unnoticed for months, and each fix means working on the roof under the array.
How to spot a failed microinverter
The monitoring app usually shows a grid of panels. A failed microinverter shows up as a panel reading zero, a panel that keeps dropping in and out, or one that is far below its neighbors on a clear day. Sometimes a whole row goes dark, which points to a wiring or trunk cable problem rather than individual units. If your app stopped updating altogether, the issue may be the communications gateway, not the microinverters.
Heat and microinverters
Microinverters sit just under the panels, in the hottest spot on the roof. On a Chandler summer afternoon, that space can get far hotter than the air temperature. Most units are designed for it, but heat still takes a toll on electronics over time.
Warranties and labor
Microinverters typically carry 25-year warranties, so many failed units can be replaced at no cost for the part. Labor is a different story. Some manufacturers' warranties cover labor and others do not; EnergySage notes, for example, that Enphase's coverage leaves microinverter labor to the owner. We look up each serial number, check the coverage, help you file the replacement request, and tell you what you will pay before we start. If your installer is gone, the warranty usually still holds, since it comes from the manufacturer.
Mixing old and new units
When an original model is discontinued, the replacement must be compatible with the rest of the system and the communications gateway. Some newer units do not talk to older gateways, which can mean updating the gateway as well. We check compatibility before ordering so the new units report in the app like the old ones did.
Fix several at once
Each roof visit has a setup cost: getting up, moving tiles if needed, and removing the panel to reach the unit underneath. If several units are failing or flagged as weak, replacing them in one visit saves money. If a reroof is coming up, the time the panels are off is the cheapest moment of all.
What Microinverter Repair Covers
From finding the failed unit to seeing it report again.
Panel-level diagnosis
Reviewing panel-by-panel data to separate failed units from wiring, gateway or shading problems.
Gateway and communications check
Testing the monitoring gateway and its connection, since a dead app does not always mean dead hardware.
Warranty lookup and claim
Checking serial numbers against manufacturer coverage and helping with the replacement request.
Unit replacement
Removing the panel, swapping the microinverter, and reinstalling the panel with connectors properly seated.
Trunk cable and connector repair
Fixing damaged cable or connectors when a whole row is down.

Typical Microinverter Repair Costs
| Job | Typical range |
|---|---|
| Diagnostic inspection | $150 to $300 |
| General solar panel repair | $400 to $1,000 |
| Technician labor | About $100 per hour, 1-hour minimum |
Ranges vary with how many units fail, warranty coverage for parts and labor, roof type and access, and gateway compatibility. Your written estimate is the price.

Microinverter Repair Questions
Is one dead microinverter worth fixing?
Usually. Each one runs a panel that would otherwise produce nothing for the rest of the system's life. If the part is under warranty, the cost may be mostly labor.
Why is my whole app showing zero?
If every panel reads zero at once, the issue is more likely the gateway, Wi-Fi, a breaker or the trunk cable than every microinverter failing together. That is usually a quicker fix.
Can I replace microinverters with a string inverter?
It is possible but usually costly and requires a full redesign and new permits. In most cases, replacing failed micros is the better value.
How long do microinverters last?
Most carry 25-year warranties. Individual units can still fail early, especially in hot climates, which is why the warranty matters.
