Why Pigeons Love Solar Arrays
Solar panel bird proofing solves a problem many Chandler homeowners notice soon after solar goes up: pigeons moving in under the panels. The gap between the array and the roof gives them shade from the summer sun, shelter from wind and a spot hawks cannot reach. Once one pair nests, more tend to follow, and the noise, droppings and debris build up fast.
What the birds leave behind
Nests made of twigs and debris pile up under the panels, holding moisture and blocking airflow that helps keep panels cooler. Droppings stain the roof and gutters and can carry disease risk when they dry and turn to dust. Birds also peck and pull at exposed wiring, and damaged insulation on a DC cable is a real hazard. On tile roofs, pigeons often settle in the tile channels too, so cleanup sometimes extends past the array itself.
How bird proofing works
The standard fix is a galvanized or coated wire mesh fastened around the perimeter of the array, closing the gap between the panel edges and the roof. The mesh is held to the panel frames with clips designed for solar modules, so nothing is drilled into the panels or the roof. Done properly, it keeps birds out while letting air move under the panels.
Cleanup comes first
Mesh over an active nest only traps the problem. Before installing it, we remove nests, scrape and bag droppings, and rinse the affected roof area. If young birds or eggs are present, we work around the nesting cycle rather than sealing them in. We also look over the wiring once the debris is cleared, and if birds have chewed cable or damaged connectors, those repairs go on the estimate before the mesh goes up.
HOA and appearance
Mesh is visible from the street on many roofs, especially in the gaps along the front edge. Some Chandler communities, including master-planned ones like Ocotillo, have HOA rules about exterior changes. Black mesh tends to blend with dark panels. If your HOA requires approval, get that before we schedule, and we can provide a product description and photos for the application.
When to do it
The ideal time is before the birds settle in, which for many owners means right after installation or while the panels are off for a reroof. If birds are already there, the sooner the better, since nesting and droppings only grow.
What Bird Proofing Covers
Cleanup, repair and prevention in one visit.
Nest and debris removal

Droppings cleanup
Scraping, bagging and rinsing the roof under and around the panels.
Wiring inspection
Checking cables and connectors for chewing or damage once the debris is gone.
Perimeter mesh install
Fastening coated mesh around the array edges with clips made for solar frames, without drilling into panels or roof.
Panel rinse
Washing droppings off the glass with purified water so production is not held back.

Typical Bird Proofing Costs
| Job | Typical range |
|---|---|
| Bird mesh kit, materials only | $60 to $200 |
| Panel cleaning, per panel | $15 to $35 |
| Inspection visit | $150 to $300 |
Ranges vary with array size and perimeter length, how many nests are present, roof type and access, and any wiring repair. Your written estimate is the price.
How Bird Proofing Works
1. Look at the roof
We check how many nests there are, where birds get in, and whether wiring is damaged.
2. Price the full job
Cleanup, any wiring repair, and mesh are listed separately on a written estimate.
3. Clean out
Nests, debris and droppings are removed and the roof is rinsed.
4. Seal the edges
Mesh is clipped around the array so birds cannot get back underneath.

Solar Panel Bird Proofing Questions
Will bird mesh damage my panels or void the warranty?
The clips grip the panel frame and do not drill into the panel or the roof. Ask your panel manufacturer about their rules if you have concerns, and we can show you the clip type before installation.
Can I just scare the pigeons off?
Spikes, decoys and noise devices rarely work long-term under a solar array. Once birds have nested there, closing off the space is usually the only lasting fix.
Will mesh trap heat under the panels?
Properly installed mesh has openings large enough for air to move freely. It blocks birds, not airflow, and removing nests actually improves airflow under the panels.
Do I need HOA approval?
It depends on your community. Some HOAs want to review any visible change to the roof. Check your association's rules before scheduling.
